The Russian Geographical Society’s Headquarters in Moscow hosts an exhibition called ‘Brought back by permafrost’ where you can see the remains of mammoths which are more than 30,000 years old.

The exhibits are provided by the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia). A significant part of the world's known fossil bones and soft tissue of mammoths, woolly rhinoceros, bison, muskox, cave lions and other members of the Pleistocene fauna were found in Yakutia.

A mammoth is any species of the extinct genus Mammuthus. They were members of the family Elephantidae who lived in the Quaternary period. Their height reached 5.5 meters and they weighted about 10-12 tons. Mammoths lived in the Pliocene epoch (about 4.5 million years ago) in Europe, Asia, Africa and North America. By the beginning of the Holocene period (10 thousand. BC), most of the giants died out.

The exhibition will run from 22 Dec (Monday) to 30 Dec (Tuesday) on weekdays from 11 am to 6 pm. Free admission.

After the Christmas holidays the exhibition will continue its work on a special schedule. Stay updated on the page of the Society’s Moscow Lecture!
