In 2011 under the auspices of the Russian Geographical Society was held a regional competition ‘The Best Geography Teacher’ and the first in the contemporary Russian history Congress of Geography teachers.
Goals:
Attraction of public attention and administrative bodies in interest to the activity of Geography teachers and popularization of this profession.
Objectives:
Conduct of a regional competition ‘The Best Geography Teacher’;
Conduct of a distant competition for schoolchildren ‘Geographical Recruitment’.

Results:
The accomplishment of the Final Resolution of the First Geography Teachers’ Congress.

It was resolved that:
- Geography should be included as a mandatory subject (no less than two classes per week) into all the programmes of basic general and secondary general (full) education; primary and secondary professional education;
- It is impermissible to include Geography into any artificially built interdisciplinary complexes like ‘Natural History’, ‘Social History’, ‘Russia in the world’ and the like;
- The Russian Geographical Society should be asked to provide special grants for organizing centers of field research in regions and special grants ‘School Expedition’;
- Consider a ‘mark approach’ impermissible for the assessment of teacher’s labour and propose a new criteria of qualification framework of a teacher in accordance with international requirements.
- The announcement of the results of a questionnaire.
- The tightening of requirements for federal standards of student’s books, methodic manuals and atlases.
- The realization of the necessity to popularize and advance geographical sciences.
