It is known, that about 70 percent of the Earth's surface is water-covered, but water is mostly salt. Only 2.5% of Earth's water is freshwater. Almost all of it is locked up in ice and glaciers.

The planet's fresh water is very unevenly distributed: the vast majority of the population lives in predominantly arid parts of the planet. In fact, the shortage of fresh water has effects on 40% of people in the world.

By the middle of the ХXI century, the number of people living with a constant lack of water could reach 4 billion people, because the Earth's freshwater reserves do not increase, and its consumption is constantly growing.

Russia is one of the countries with the richest water resources. This country ranks second in the world after Brazil.  Moreover, Russia is a leader in freshwater reserves: more than 20% of the planet’s freshwater is concentrated in this country.  There are almost 3 million rivers and 2.7 million lakes in Russia. In Baikal alone, 20% of the world's freshwater reserves are contained.
